As part of the de licensing process at RSRL Harwell (formerly UKAEA Harwell), the brief required a new facilities building. Our design model was developed with clients and stakeholder end users to provide a highly sustainable landmark building delivering a value engineered scheme capable of adaptation for changing future needs. Not only have we set out to create a modern convivial working environment but through sustained commitment to achieving a very environmentally conscious building, we have created an exciting and stimulating architectural statement.

MORSE Project

Client: RSRL (UKAEA HARWELL)
Brief: New facilities building at RSRL Harwell.

Morse Building Model

The building is designed as two separate entities or pavilions under a single sculptural roof form that unites and provides homogeneity to the overall composition. The internal layout is arranged around a central spine circulation space that features a continuous coffered ceiling lit with sun-pipes. This corridor terminates in a 2 storey oriel window that provides a dramatic architectural statement (with the roof form) as one approaches the building.

Natural ventilation and GSHP under floor heating and cooling have been used to help reduce energy consumption; sun-pipes are used to provide natural lighting throughout – these measures have been achieved through building fabric and not retro fitted high maintenance apparatus.

Large simple barn like forms were used as the architectural model to reflect the wider rural context. The materials palette is used to heighten this effect – the walls are clad with Cedar shakes or lime render through which fenestration pods project. These are clad in powder coated aluminium and this machine like quality immediately contrasts with the earthy textures and tonal values of the shakes. The milled aluminium roof appears to float above this, whilst the building sits over locally sourced stone filled gabions. The effect is a stimulating modern building with sculptural qualities yet with an indigenous grounding through form and materials.
